Coming Up in Mrs. Krantz's Class

We are excited for 2017 and all that is in store for preschool learning.  As your preschooler returns, we will be diving in deep to some aquarium fun.  We will have an underwater cavern to explore and play in, water and sea animals to play with, wonderful water oriented books, and all kinds of aquarium fun.  Watch for our aquarium hallway to take shape!

In worship we will finish up the birth story of Jesus and the gifts of the wisemen.

On Thursday, we will make up our missed Happy Birthday Jesus party!  We will head over to the church at 9:30am to have science fun with Mr. Levi and then move onto our party fun.  We will head back to preschool around 10:30 for Art with Mrs. Hein.  Family is welcome to attend our party!  No need to pack a snack on Thursday!

Keep in mind that the temperature needs to be 25 degrees or more for us to play outside.  No need to bring snow clothes on days that are super cold.  And be sure to watch for curbside pick up.  If a staff member is standing at the end of the driveway, please use curbside drop off.  Please be careful walking as the ice is slippery.  We do our very best to keep the walkways clear, but please do be extra careful.

Enrollment for next fall opens of January 1.  You should have received an email with an attached form.  Please let me know if you did not receive that email.  Please let anyone who is hoping to enroll next fall know that they should get on the waitlist now.  We do have a 2 day opening in Mrs. O'Loughlin's class right now, so please spread the word.

I'll be sending a separate email soon regarding my family situation and how that impacts preschool.  Thank you for your continued prayers.

Blessings on this new year!
Becky

Coming Up in Mrs. O'Loughlin's Class

I am excited to get back in the classroom with your sweet preschoolers!  We are going to be going on a forest adventure in January!  Our dramatic play is now a campsite!  Sticks will be used to write! Cut up stumps have been added to the block center! And get ready for a lot of green and brown creations!

We love to write in preschool!  There are always plenty of writing opportunities every day in all areas of the classroom.  Now that these kiddos are expert preschoolers, we will be focusing on some intentional handwriting and letter forming.  Don’t worry if your preschooler is not yet writing letters!  Each time a pencil is picked up and strokes are made, those writing skills are being developed and practiced!  Fostering a love for writing is my number one goal!

In worship we will be talking about Epiphany and the long journey the kings took to find God’s greatest gift, our Savior, Jesus!

On Thursday, we will be having science with Mr. Levi and our Happy Birthday Jesus Party over at the church.  We will walk over together at 9:15am, do some fun dry ice experiments with Mr. Levi and then throw a belated birthday party for Jesus!  We’ll head back over to the preschool at 10:30am!  Cupcakes will be our sweet treat, so no need to pack a snack.  Parents and siblings are welcome to join us for the celebration!

A reminder that we only play outside if the temperature is above 25 degrees.  According to the forecast, it’s not looking like we’ll be getting outside during our short week.  No need to bring snow clothes on those too cold days.

Praying you all have a very Happy New Year and that God’s richest blessings shower down on you in 2017!!

Family and Music!

In Nigeria, family is extremely important and a focus of the Christmas celebration! Family travels from miles away to be together! A big party is thrown on Christmas Eve complete with lots of music! Drums, rhythm sticks and singing ring out! On Christmas morning, families go to church together to praise God for the gift of Jesus!

During centers preschoolers made their own musical instruments! And families were a big focus of the morning as some very special gifts are being finished up!

SNOW!!! - Mrs. Krantz and Mrs. O'Loughlin

We all got to play out in the snow today!! Although there wasn't much, plenty of fun was had making tracks, forming snow balls and running around trying to catch snowflakes on tongues!

Addy got back from Romania and brought each preschooler a star wand! The children in Romania carol throughout towns carrying a stick with stars at the top. Ask your preschooler what song they sang as we marched around the classroom, holding our stars high!

Have a wonderful, snowy, day!

Addy Went to Argentina - Mrs. Krantz and Mrs. O'Loughlin

Addy told us about Argentina today! It's very hot there during Christmas time! So no snow! The children in Argentina decorate their trees with cotton balls to look like snow. They also celebrate by setting off fireworks at night! Ask your preschooler what the most important decoration is? And where is it placed?

Preparing for Christmas - Mrs. Krantz

Welcome Advent!  The preschoolers were so excited to see the changes to the classroom and pointed out all of the fun decorations.  They help us prepare our hearts for Christmas during this time of Advent!

Addy, the Advent Angel visited today to tell us about Christmas in China.  Addy flies all over the world to learn about Christmas in different places and shares what she find with the preschoolers!  She will visit us everyday and we will be tracking her visits on the world map in our room!

Paper chain and lanterns were a big part of our centers time as those of ways people in China celebrate Christmas!

Welcome Addy! - Mrs. O'Loughlin

Addy the Advent Angel was here this morning! She flew all the way to China and back to tell us about their Christmas celebrations! Boys and girls in China decorate with paper lanterns and paper chains! During centers we had the opportunity to make some of our own and decorate the classroom!!

We sang about God's son and how he was born for us! Oh how we love this joyous time of year!

Snow Information

Snow is in the forecast! Just a reminder...if Pullman School District is delayed or canceled, preschool will be canceled. Any cancellation will be posted on the blog and on this page by 7am. We will not contact you directly.
If the parking lot is not safe, we will have curbside drop off. You will know there is curbside drop off if a staff member is standing at the end of the driveway. If we have curbside drop off, please come in the parking lot from the side closest to the church. Drive to our end of the parking lot and wait until the area in front of the driveway is open. Only one car at a time please! We will unload your preschooler and escort him/her inside.
We play outside in the snow! Please bring hats, mittens, snow pants, boots if it snows! Mrs. Krantz's class, please come in your snow clothes and leave it all on! We'll do our outside time right away!

Advent in Preschool - Coming Up in All Classes!

Welcome to the season of Advent!  We absolutely love teaching during this time of year and this really the only time of year that Mrs. Krantz and Mrs. O'Loughlin cooridnate planning for their classes!  Everyone in preschool will be learning and doing very similar things! Preparing for our Savior’s birth brings so much joy and excitement and we love sharing that with the preschoolers!

Each day we will get a visit from Addy the Advent Angel.  Addy travels all over the world to see how other children prepare and celebrate Christmas.  The preschoolers will hear about Addy’s adventures during opening circle and then have an opportunity to experience that unique celebration with an activity, craft or food at centers time!

Addy’s traveling schedule will always be found here:

ADDY’S CHRISTMAS CELEBRATIONS ROUTE
Monday: China
Tuesday: Argentina
Wednesday: Romania
Thursday: Japan
Friday: Greece

In worship we hear about the angel sharing some very special news with Mary!  God’s son is to be born and for us!  We’ll of course be singing some wonderful known Christmas carols and learning a few new ones.

We love to play outside!  Please be sure to send a warm coat, hats and gloves with your preschooler everyday!  And when that snow starts falling down, send in snow boots and pants!  If it is colder than 25 degrees we do not go outside.

Our last two days of December will be our Happy Birthday Jesus Parties!  We have this celebration over at the church.  If you would like to help plan this celebration, please let us know!  Designating tasks between multiple parents from both upstairs and downstairs works really well!  There is usually someone needed to oversee organization, plan a craft, plan an activity, prepare fun foods, and decorations.  We do have a budget for these parties as well as posting sign ups in the lobby.  If you have any questions or need any clarification, let us know!

Praying you all have a wonderful week!

Pumpkins and Turkeys - Mrs. Krantz

We had such fun with pumpkin play dough and making turkey headbands!  Have a very Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Thanksgiving Feast - Mrs. O'Loughlin

We had a lot of fun with thanksgiving food today! Pumpkin pie was made in the sensory table, numbers were drawn in plates of corn kernels, turkeys were created and plenty of pretend feasting was going on! I think these kiddos are ready for the real thing!

I pray you all have a wonderful and blessed Thanksgiving!

Turkey Tail! Turkey Tail! - Mrs. O'Loughlin

This morning, each preschooler beautifully took a turn hiding a feather under lettered turkeys while everyone else covered their eyes. Then they'd ask "Turkey Tail, turkey Tail, 1 2 3! Turkey Tail, turkey Tail, where could it be?!" The remaining friends would take turns guessing which letter Turkey the feather was under! I love seeing this collaborative learning and play!

Thank you for everyone who has contributed to the item drive for the Spokane Ronald McDonald House! We are getting closer to our goal of 12 full bins!!

Reminder, SHARE Day is Friday!

Thanksgiving - Mrs. Krantz

This morning we sang our super silly turkey song and then read a counting book about the first Thanksgiving.  The Pilgrims and Wampanoag had quite a feast together!

In our worship time, we sang about always giving thanks to God for everything. We thought about the many things we can be thankful for.

Centers time included woodworking with Papa Ken, Journaling with Mr. Joe, lots of tower building, stamping with corn cobs and creating yarn dolls!

SHARE Day is Thursday (tomorrow) and Friday!

There is NOTHING our God Cannot Do - Mrs. Krantz

Our worship time today focused on the story of Abraham and Sarah hearing from three visitors that they would have a baby boy a year later.  Sarah laughed because she was too old to have a baby.  But... God is mightier than the ages and there is nothing He cannot do!  Sarah had a baby boy and his name was Isaac.  I am always encouraged when I am reminded that there is NOTHING our amazing God cannot do.

We also enjoyed having Mr. Levi with us for science today.  He shared color diffusion with us and we did some color diffusion with natural dyes during centers time.  We listened to books together, used our favorite white board for drawing and writing, matched feathers on turkeys with numbers, and folded paper fans, a new favorite of these kiddos.

Our Ronald McDonald Drive is underway and as a preschool, we have filled up 5 totes with items to share!  We are hoping to fill up 12, so we are well on our way.  We are collecting through Friday!

Colorful Preschool Day! - Mrs. O'Loughlin

We were delighted with all the colorful fun that was had at preschool today! Mr. Levi showed us what water diffusion was using rainbow candies! The preschoolers observed that the candy turned white once all the color was diffused into the water AND some even had a little "S" floating in the water!

During centers, Papa Ken helped us dye fabric in some colorful cranberry, spinach and beet juice! The end results were vibrant and beautiful!

Our Ronald McDonald Drive is off to a great start! Today, we filled up 3 totes with almost 50 items!! So much kindness and compassion is being shown as these totes fill up with such generous giving!

SHARE Day is Thursday!

Monday, November 14, 2016

Water Diffusing Colors! - Mrs. O'Loughlin

Mr. Levi used skittles to show the preschoolers how water diffusion works! Ask your preschooler what happened to the skittle in the water!

During centers, some white fabric was being colored using natural dyes diffused from fruits and vegetables. See if your preschooler remembers which fruit and veggies were diffused to make our own dye! They all turned out so beautiful!

In worship we learned that God kept his promise to Abraham that he would have a baby! Ask your preschooler what age Abraham was when God made this promise!

Don't forget our Ronald McDonald House Drive!! We're collecting items all week!!!

Such Generosity! - Mrs. Krantz

We are thankful that Mr. Levi is so generous with his time!  He came in and shared some diffusion science with us this morning.  Ask your preschooler what he put in the water and what happened!

We experienced more generosity of time with Papa Phil and Papa Ken sharing their time as they helped the preschooler use natural dye, diffused from fruits and veggies, to dye fabric. These types of fun projects are successful with extra help!

We also are experiencing generosity as our Ronald McDonald House drive has begun.  Our class collected 40 items today!   We filled up one bin full of toys and started a bin with hats.mittens and another with kitchen items.  We have 24 totes that we were able to purchase for the ROnald McDonald House thanks to a Thrivent Action Grant.  I would love to see at least 12 of those totes filled up with items for the house!  Get your family and neighbors involved!  Let's share the spirit of generosity and giving!

Generously Saying Thank You - Mrs. Krantz

Sometimes when we are grumpy or feeling sad, saying thank you or finding something to be thankful about can help us change how we feel.  Today we practiced finding things to be thankful for and saying thank you for small things.  Today, I am so very thankful for your children!  Teaching these kiddos is something I am very thankful for.

Our thankful turkeys are on the bulletin board as you come up the stairs.  Watch for fall tree artwork to show up on the artwork bulletin board on the landing.  Our forest of Giving Trees is at the top of the stairs and is full of ideas about generosity.

Just a reminder that there is no preschool on Friday in honor of Veteran's Day.

How Do You Know There Is 10? - Mrs. O'Loughlin

We count every day in preschool!

This morning, there were 10 leaves. The question: how do you know there's 10? The preschoolers thought for a little bit then came up with the answer, because we can count! We practiced one to one correspondence using leaves! Some would be taken away and some added. Each time we counted, the number we stopped on was the amount!

To get in even more practice, we went on a leaf hunt for 10 leaves!! You have to be a bit more choosy when there's a limit. Each preschooler walked around, counting leaves one by one as they put them in their bag. Some preschoolers found a teacher and counted with them!

Obstacles Course - Mrs. Krantz

This beautiful fall day beckoned our class to spend extra time outside this morning.  I'm so glad we did!  The preschoolers decided to build an obstacle course together!  This included obstacles to jump over or go around, a balance beam, areas to run, and things to jump off of.  They did a pretty amazing job designing and implementing the course.  Then, they spent a long time running the course!  Be ready for tired kiddos today!

Preschoolers say "Thanks!" - Mrs. O'Loughlin

We were so inspired by our book Bear Says Thanks, the preschoolers took every opportunity to say "thanks!" during our morning!

"Thanks" to Veterans by making beautiful star cards! "Thanks" to Miss Joyce for helping with our turkey writings. "Thanks" to Papa Ken for coming in and making wooden nickels with us. "Thanks" for saying kind words about our fine motor turkey creations. "Thanks" to Mrs. Knight for reading thanksgiving books! "Thanks" to friends for sharing toys. "Thanks" to Mrs. O'Loughlin for opening snack packages. "Thanks" to God for such a beautiful day to play outside in the leaves!

I hope these many "Thanks" are being said at home as well!

What was Forgotten? - Mrs. Krantz

This morning we read "The Giving Tree" and thought a lot about the little boy in the story.  There were some things that he forgot to do.  He forgot to say please and thank you.  He forgot to show kindness and gratitude by spending time with the giving tree.  We thought about times is is important to say thank you.

In worship Mrs. Krantz let Mrs. Barrington pick first from the turkeys to play with.  One turkey made noise, and one use to make noise but was broken.  Mrs. Barrington chose the turkey that wasn't broken.  It reminded us of the story of Abraham and Lot.  They needed to choose different land to settle in and Abrahama let Lot choose first.

In our centers time, we spent a lot of time making thank you cards and pictures for our Veterans.  We can't wait to give them to those who have served our country!  We also were busy building some amazing towers!

Grateful Turkeys - Mrs. O'Loughlin

What a fun day! After reading Bear Says Thanks, we came up with all the different things we are thankful for! Jesus, friends, toys, and candy are just a few that made the list! We talked about how we show our gratitude by saying "thanks!" just like Bear!

During centers, preschoolers had the chance to say thanks to Veterans by making a card. Many of them chose to do this and show their gratitude toward the men and women who serve our country! Papa Phil, who is a veteran, came in to help these little turkeys make some turkeys! They turned out so cute and are hanging in the hallway! Before Papa Phil left, we all said "Thanks!" to him for being a Veteran.

In worship Mrs. O'Loughlin and Mrs. Knight tried to sit in the same chair! There wasn't enough room for both of them! Good thing our preschoolers are so kind and problem solvers! Get another chair! Over there! Of course! Just like Abraham gave up fields for Lot's animals, Mrs. Knight gave up the chair for Mrs. O'Loughlin. She was showing kindness!

Ask your preschooler about the mushrooms! We did some scientific observations outside with some fungi discovered in the back hill!

Coming Up in Mrs. O'Loughlin's Class: November 7-11

“Be kind and compassionate to everyone.” Ephesians 4:32… If you have not already noticed, take a look at our kindness wreath!  Each time Miss Stahlecker and I see a preschool displaying kindness and compassion, a ribbon is added.  We already have so many colorful ribbons filling it up!  And I know it’s going to become fuller as the month goes on.

Along with compassion and kindness, another robust word will be added to your preschooler’s vocabulary this week…gratitude!  With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, we will be talking about all the things God blesses us with!

Using a silly turkey and a few cornucopias we'll be practicing number recognition and one to one correspondence.  We'll also be doing some creative writing based off our book Turkey Trouble!  So much fun Thanksgiving themed learning!

Our charitable drive for the Ronald McDonald House in Spokane begins next week!  If you would like a bin to have at your place of work, please let me know and I’ll get you one! Just like the compassion fills up our classroom we want to fill up bins with items the Ronald McDonald House needs!

Coming Up In Mrs. Krantz's Class: November 7-11

This week we will be working with the book "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein.  This book can bring up many different emotions and responses.  We will be looking at the tree, how the tree was selfless and giving.  We will also be looking at the boy and what the preschoolers think about his actions or lack of action.  Our hallways tree will turn into our very own giving tree.  We will be adding ideas we come up with for being generous and giving.  Mrs. Barrington and I will be adding times we see this in the preschool through the actions of the kiddos.

This week we will be working a names and other writing.  Do not worry if your preschooler is not writing letters or writing their name legibly.  Our focus is strengthening those fine motor muscles do writing is easy!  Those preschoolers who have those strong muscles, we will be giving them more to write and more challenge as they continue on their handwriting development.

Friday we will not have preschool in honor of Veteran's Day.  Throughout the week we will have a card making station to create thank you cards for our Veterans.  If you have Veterans in your fmaily and would like cards to give to them, please send me and email or text and we will save cards for you to distribute.  The remaining cards will be given to the Veterans of our congregation.

The week of November 14-18 we will be holding our charitable drive for the Spokane Ronald McDonald House.  There will be tubs in each classroom to collect items needed. Generosity - Mrs. Krantz

Generosity was the word of the day today!  We talked about what generosity was and different ways we could be generous.  We can be generous in kindness, in helping, with smiles and with hugs.  All month we will be working with this word, and with the word thankful.  I hope you each got a thank you at the end of the preschool day.  We will be working hard to be generous with our thank yous to the the special people in our lives!

We made a great poster with our hands, speaking of how our hands can be kind and so obey the Lord!  We also made beautiful fall decorations with leaves.

Showing Compassion! - Mrs. O'Loughlin

What do we do we someone is hurt, sick or sad? The preschoolers went around the circle and gave some great answers! When we looked at our list Mrs. O'Loughlin summed it all up using one big word: Compassion! Ask your preschooler how they show compassion to a friend who is hurt, sick or sad!

The classroom was full of doctors today! Each patient was very well cared for as the medical experts showed compassion to the sick and hurt.

This group is full of excellent listeners! Just like Abraham obeyed God, we had to listen to the leader and do as they said. There was a lot of packing up our suitcase and walking a long way (just like Abraham!)

On Friday, our special visitor, Physical Therapist Sean will be here! Have your preschooler choose a "patient" to bring along on Friday!

More Nocturnal Fun - Mrs. Krantz

Today we had some fun with glo stick science.  We had glo sticks all glowing at the same brightness.  We discussed what would happen to the glo sticks when one was put in ice water, one was put in room temperature water, and one was put in very hot water.  We tested our predictions and found out some exciting stuff.  Ask your preschooler about it!

Nighttime Creatures at Preschool - Mrs. O'Loughlin

We had such a fun morning!! Flashlights and glow sticks helped light our path as we played and learned in the dark! The light table was the brightest spot in the classroom and these cute preschoolers had to squint as they built with colorful tiles. I heard some fantastic descriptive words as little fingers played with slime! Shadow puppets and the lava lamp rounded out our nocturnal day!

On Thursday, Nurse Tawny will be visiting our classroom! Have your preschooler bring in a doll or stuffed animal to act as a patient as we discuss what it means to show care and compassion to others!

A Letter From Mrs. Krantz

Dear Preschool Families,

The preschool is deeply significant to me as a person living out my calling in a vocation that I believe God made me for.  Concordia Lutheran Preschool has been the fulfillment of a dream God put in my heart almost 20 years ago.  He has been so good to bring such a dream to fruition.

Seventeen years ago, God also brought about my calling to be a wife to a Godly man, a man of deep integrity, a man who has made me better in every imaginable way.  Twelve years ago, God blessed our dream of being parents by giving us Hannah, then Isaac and then Eli.  My family is the most important part of my life, and my vocation of wife and mom is first and foremost.  Never in our life plans did we envision Aaron not being part of it.  Our harsh reality is that without anything short of a miracle, Aaron will be in heaven with our Savior much sooner than we would plan.  And so, we look ahead together as husband and wife to decide what our family needs to do in light of our upcoming circumstances.

We love Concordia.  It has been one of my deepest pleasures to birth the preschool and grow it through God’s blessing to what it is today.  It is thriving, strong and sharing the love of Jesus with your children each day.  I have had the luxury of working in this ministry because we have not been dependent upon my income.  However, our family is preparing ourselves for that to change.  And so, at the end of this academic year I will be ending my employment at Concordia Lutheran Preschool in order to pursue employment that will provide for the financial needs of my family.

This has been a deeply painful decision.  I love this preschool and each child that has walked through its doors.  It will be difficult to say goodbye.  Please know that I fully plan to finish strong.  Each and every day I will pour into your children a love of learning, a joy of discovery and share with them the love Jesus has for each of them.

With love,
Becky

Nocturnal Day - Mrs. Krantz

What a fun night we had in preschool today!  We shared our nighttime lovies, made letters and shapes with glo sticks and sang a starry song.  We enjoyed watching the movement of the lava lamp and making shadows on the ceiling with bats silhouettes.  Slime was very gooey and fun to play with the in darkness of our nocturnal classroom.  We read books by flashlight and saw illustrations of a special book on the ceiling as a shadow.  What a fun, dark, nocturnal experience!

Nocturnal Day - Mrs. O'Loughlin

As each preschooler entered our nocturnal classroom, they used a flashlight to find Miss Stahlecker on the big rug! She had tons of glow sticks and some pretty fantastic shapes and letters were made! After everyone introduced their lovey, Mrs. O'Loughlin read a nighttime shadow book! Everyone got comfortable and looked up at the ceiling where the pictures were projected! Such a fun book!

During centers, the light table was a busy building center of colorful tiles. Bat headbands were also made as well as sleepy books being read in the bat cave. But the favorite activity was the slime!! So many giggles as we tried to figure out if this stuff was a liquid or a solid!

Our special nocturnal snack was so yummy and so festive!

We ended our night with one last sing a long to Echolocation!!

Coming Up in Mrs. O'Loughlin's Class 10/31-11/4

Thank you all for coming to the Pumpkin Party!  It was such a fun morning and I was so excited to see ALL my preschoolers on one day and being dressed up in such adorable costumes made it even better!

On Monday and Tuesday, we are having our Nocturnal Days!  The preschoolers will experience what it’s like to be awake in the nighttime!  We get to wear pajamas and bring a special nighttime lovey while we learn and play in the darkened classroom.  No snack is needed as a special nocturnal treat will be provided!

During the month of November we will be discussing what it means to be compassionate and caring towards others!  On Thursday and Friday we are having two very special guests; Nurse Tawny and Physical Therapist Sean!  Each show care and compassion to their patients when they go to work.  We get the opportunity to learn about these jobs and the work that they do in caring for others!  Have your preschooler bring in a stuffed animal or doll to care for on Thursday and Friday!

In worship we will hear about a man named Abraham.  Abraham loved God and obeyed God!  We’ll discover that being compassionate and caring to others is obeying God too!
Please be on the lookout for our Kindness Wreath!  Whenever Miss Stahlecker and I see a preschooler showing kindness, care and compassion, we add a ribbon to the wreath!

I pray you all have a blessed and relaxing weekend!
-Mrs. O’Loughlin
